New method to increase utilization of donor lungs

There is a limited number of donor lungs and every third does not qualify for transplantation.

Two Gothenburg based researchers have evaluated the possibility to use donor lungs that would have been rejected according to current rules. Presently only lungs from brain dead organ donor patients with a functioning heart are allowed to be used for transplantation. The new method would enable the donation of lungs also from brain dead patients who suffered cardiac death. This could increase the availability of donor organs and thus create new opportunities for patients waiting for lung transplantation.
